Improving plant performance does not always require complete re-automation. For a vulcanization plant producing rubber bellows at the Continental Vahrenwald facility, the engineers decided to keep the controller and improve performance solely through greater data transparency. The prerequisite for this was simple, software-based data access from the SQL database to the controller. Angelo Bindi from Continental explains the solution.

Exchanging production data between PLCs, robot controllers and databases simply, quickly and flexibly — this was previously hardly possible with large volumes of data without significant effort or performance losses.
